Dawson’s Dream 5K

The race was this past Saturday and it couldn’t have been a more gorgeous day.  There was a sea of green everywhere.  The number of registered participants went above and beyond what we had hoped for.  I don’t have a final number as to how much money was raised, but we got the word out to approximately 300 people of the need for more funding for pediatric cancer research.  Its a start.  The breast cancer movement started with a single walk in Dallas, Texas, and look at where it is now.  We can do this!

I have to talk for a minute about Courtney Kavanaugh.  She came up with the idea to do a 5K in Dawson’s memory.  She never had Dawson in her class when she taught at Geneva Elementary, but yet felt compelled to do something.  I remember there were many times we received meals for my other children from Courtney when I was in the hospital with Dawson.  I never saw her deliver meals and never actually met Courtney until we all gathered at my house a couple of weeks ago to put the race packets together.  Her heart is simply made of gold.  She saw a need to do something, and do something she did.  The planning that she put into this 5K was nothing short of phenomenal.  The race went off without a hitch.  I think she must have thought of everything.  I honestly don’t see how she did it while working full time.  I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time.  All I can say is thank you, and that just isn’t enough.  Besides being a huge success, the race was a ton of fun!  This will be an annual event so if you didn’t get to come out to this one, don’t miss the next one.

As I sit here and type this, a song by Matthew West is playing on my TV.  The song is titled “Do Something”.  He sings about how he woke up and the world was so full of trouble and he lifts his hands to God and shouts, “God, why don’t you do something!”  God says back, “I did, I created you!”    Here is the song in its entirety.

I woke up this morning
Saw a world full of trouble now
Thought, how’d we ever get so far down
How’s it ever gonna turn around
So I turned my eyes to Heaven
I thought, “God, why don’t You do something?”
Well, I just couldn’t bear the thought of
People living in poverty
Children sold into slavery
The thought disgusted me
So, I shook my fist at Heaven
Said, “God, why don’t You do something?”
He said, “I did, I created you”

If not us, then who
If not me and you
Right now, it’s time for us to do something
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something

I’m so tired of talking
About how we are God’s hands and feet
But it’s easier to say than to be
Live like angels of apathy who tell ourselves
It’s alright, “somebody else will do something”
Well, I don’t know about you
But I’m sick and tired of life with no desire
I don’t want a flame, I want a fire
I wanna be the one who stands up and says,
“I’m gonna do something”

If not us, then who
If not me and you
Right now, it’s time for us to do something
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something

We are the salt of the earth
We are a city on a hill (shine shine, shine shine)
But we’re never gonna change the world
By standing still
No we won’t stand still
No we won’t stand still
No we won’t stand still

If not us, then who
If not me and you
Right now, it’s time for us to do something
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something [x3]

It is time for us to do something about childhood cancer.  Let’s take Courtney’s example to heart and do something!  Thank you to everyone who came out to the 5K!  We are the spark that will light the fire!
